Words of the Day took a brief sabbatical because creating these posts actually took me longer than it did to make what is now a sweet collection of Q (or 3″x5″ INDEX) cards but I thought I would return to blogging for some of the trickier vocab words… or just the ones I continue to have trouble remembering/differentiating (ugh there are SO many). Cheers to anyone else who is studying for a standardized test!

INTRASIGENT – ADJ: refusing to compromise. Unwilling or refusing to change one’s views or agree about something

which is very similar to

OBDURATE – ADJ: stubbornly refusing to change one’s opinion or course of action.

QUIESCENE – ADJ: stillness, motionless, quality of being at rest

not to be confused with

HALCYON – ADJ: denoting a period of time in the past that was idyllically happy & peaceful; calm. Which can also be a N: tropical kingfisher with colorful plumage OR a mythical bird that breeds in a nest floating at sea during winter solstice, charming the wind and waves into calm… yeah….

TORPID – ADJ: lethargic, sluggish, dormant (mentally or physically)

TURBID – ADJ: (of a liquid) cloudy or thick with suspended matter (like gravy!)

which is basically the opposite of:

LIMPID – ADJ: (of a liquid) free of anything that darkens; completely clear. (about eyes) unclouded, clear. (about writing or music) melodious.
